Welcome to the world of Industrial Engineering, where the complexities of daily life meet the precision of engineering. This platform is dedicated to those who seek to apply an industrial engineer’s perspective to life’s challenges, utilizing engineering tools to devise optimal solutions. It’s a space for anyone eager to convert theoretical knowledge into practical applications.
Whether you’re a student, professional, or homemaker, you might find yourself aligning with the principles of industrial engineering as a life philosophy, either consciously or subconsciously. For those who aspire to be ‘human’ or to ‘remain human,’ it’s understandable to believe that life cannot be fully quantified by formulas. While this may hold some truth, I advocate for a thought system that transcends equations, embracing a discipline that values intuition as much as it does empirical evidence: Operations Research. The concept for this site was born amidst the tumultuous times of April 2020, during the height of the ‘corona pandemic.’ Reflecting on my own challenging journey through university while studying Industrial Engineering—a time when existential questions loomed large—the pandemic’s societal impact only intensified these inquiries, ultimately inspiring the creation of this blog.
For those in the know, a course in Operations Research is a rite of passage for any industrial engineering student. Within these problems, we find an ‘objective function,’ a ‘set of constraints,’ and a ‘feasible region’ for optimal solutions. I began to see parallels between these elements and life itself. Everyone has goals, life has its purpose, and resources are finite, be it time, money, or quality. Defining one’s objectives is crucial. What is it that you wish to ‘maximize’ or ‘minimize’? Is there only one optimal point, or could there be several? These are the questions that not only drive our professional endeavors but also shape our personal journeys.
These questions and my curiosity have sparked my excitement for this field, leading me to realize it is my area of interest: How do we make decisions? What is the most appropriate solution? Although I lack extensive experience and expertise in this field, I dream of pursuing a master’s degree in it. This website, in tandem with my aspirations for a master’s degree, is a platform where I aim to contribute to society by remembering and learning, sharing and teaching, and solidifying my understanding, as well as for those who inquire, “What is Operations Research?”
I trust you will find enjoyment in it!
